Interview with Jonathan Blake!

We caught up with new up and coming fashion designer Jonathan Blake- his fashion line will be shown this October!

How did you get started in Fashion?
I gained an interest in fashion at the age of 14. Before then I had no interest in anything fashion and once I turned 14 it just sort of hit me. At first it was just dressing nice and looking nice and it sort of evolved into an interest in modeling which is where the interest really started to grow. I would learn about different designers constantly. I would school myself on each designers aesthetic fingerprint that separates them from each other. By the time my interest in modeling/acting had waned my interest in fashion was so huge that I knew by the time I had graduated high school what I had wanted to do the rest of my life, and that was to be a designer of high end clothes for the powerful, stylish woman. I knew that this was what I was meant to do as everything else just seemed so boring to me but this was something that just felt right. I went to school at the Art Institute of Houston to pursue an education in it, however towards the end of getting my degree I realized that I felt completely confident to take the risk of starting and launching my own clothing line, which is what I am doing right now. I have amazing fashion muses and mentors in my life to guide me on this incredible journey. Like I said I just felt like this is what I was meant to do with my life.

When did you know this was your dream?
I knew this was my dream by the age of 17 when I was so obsessed with fashion that it was all that I could think about, talk about and at times I even dreamed about fashion. There were times I thought about being an attorney, an actor, and even help with my parents business, however that all seemed just boring to me. There was no color or glamor to it. And I wasn't making people feel good about the way they look by doing any of those things either, which is very important to me!

What/Who inspires you?
I find that I am most inspired by very powerful women. Women who like to show there power and elegance through their appearance. I have a very close friend who is also my muse. Her name is Dr. Carolyn Farb. She is an incredibly inspirational person to me and exudes what Jonathan Blake is all about. I also design clothes based off of my own fashion tastes and style in the sense that if I was a women I would wear it.

Who do you aim to dress?
I aim to dress any woman who loves to look and feel beautiful and look different at the same time. My clothes always have to have something unique and different about them whether it be the color, style, embellishments or the fabric. Something about it has to be different from the norm. If you mean celebrities, I aim to dress: Isla Fischer, Kirsten Dunst, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and Jennie McCarthy.

How are you different?
I am different because I really pay attention to the details. My clothes are very high quality and made from extremely high quality materials inside and out, a quality found usually only in Haute Couture. Like I said everything about my garments has to be different, whether the color is an unusual or uncommon color, the fabric is unique or the embellishments are different. An example would be that the pieces that I use authentic Austrian crystals on they are actually set in sterling silver settings to protect against the common nickel allergy.
